What are the Washington, District of Columbia CLE Requirements for attorneys? 

Washington, D.C. does not currently have a Mandatory CLE requirement. Attorneys admitted in Washington, D.C. are encouraged to take CLE courses to maintain their competence while practicing law. 

Newly Admitted Attorneys and attorneys who have been inactive for 5 or more years, resigned, or been suspended for 5 or more years must complete the D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct and District of Columbia Practice mandatory course. 

 

What is the District of Columbia Rules of Professional Conduct and District of Columbia Practice mandatory course? 

The course is a one-day, live, in-person program that is offered by the D.C. Bar. More information can be found here.  

 

What is the deadline for Washington, District of Columbia Newly Admitted Attorneys to complete their requirement? 

Newly Admitted Attorneys must complete the D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct and District of Columbia Practice mandatory course no later than 12 months after their admission to the D.C. Bar.  

 

What is the deadline for Washington, D.C. Inactive Attorneys to complete their requirement? 

Attorneys who have been inactive for 5 or more years, resigned, or been suspended for 5 or more years must complete the D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct and District of Columbia Practice mandatory course before returning to active status.  

WASHINGTON, D.C. CLE REQUIREMENTS – COMPLIANCE & REPORTING 

How do Washington, D.C. attorneys certify compliance? 

Attorneys do not need to certify compliance with the D.C. Bar. After completing the D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct and District of Columbia Practice mandatory course, attorneys will receive a certificate of compliance. In order to receive the certificate of compliance, attorneys must do the following: 

  • Arrive on time (no late admittance is allowed) 
  • Return on time from breaks and lunch 
  • Complete the attendance certificate and turn it in at check out at the end of the course 
  • Stay until the conclusion of the course 
  • Pay registration fees 

The certificate of compliance is all that is needed for the attorney to be in compliance with the requirement. For more instructions on how to report your attendance, please see attached instructions below:
