The Sharia is the Muslim’s moral code or guides based on the principles of the Qur’an and the example of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The Sharia guides a Muslim to lead an ethical and moral life. For millions of devout Muslims in the United States, Sharia governs everything from the way we eat – to how we treat animals and protect the environment. Our obligation is to share the wealth with the less fortunate, how to do business, how we marry and divorce, how an estate is distributed after death and so much more.
Â
In this course, we will cover the rules governing the distribution of a Muslim’s estate. The Islamic inheritance system for all intent and purposes is a default intestacy system. For this reason, Muslim Americans have unique estate planning needs and obligations. To properly represent Muslim American clients, estate planning attorneys must be familiar with these unique needs to be able to design plans that not only protect the client’s legacy and wishes but also to make sure the estate plan complies with the Islamic law of inheritance.Â
