Biography

Jim Chester, Partner, is a technology and business attorney who represents innovation-based entrepreneurs, start-ups and privately-held companies of all sizes in a variety of industries. He primarily serves as strategic legal counsel to innovators, but has extensive expertise and experience advising clients involved in buying/selling technology and other knowledge-based companies, as well as international technology deals.

Jim is admitted to practice law in Texas but represents clients from all over the U.S., on the Internet and across the globe. Jim’s unique background and practice experience make him an idea legal counsel for software, technology and other innovative, knowledge-based companies. In addition, he assists companies in international business transactions and joint ventures.

As a renowned international business legal attorney, Jim coordinates with foreign counsel on legal projects on legal projects on behalf of U.S. clients, and serves as legal advisor to foreign companies doing business with or in the U.S.Jim also routinely handles entity formation, ecommerce, technology transactions, trademark and copyright registration, IP licensing and transfer, and other legal issues commonly faced by his clients.

Jim has received virtually every legal industry award, including being named to the “Best Lawyers in Dallas” list by D Magazine; listed as a “Rising Star” and “Super Lawyer” by Texas Super Lawyer Magazine (multiple times). In 2015, Jim was featured on the cover of Attorney at Law Magazine as its “Attorney of the Month.”

Since 2001, Jim has been an adjunct professor of law at Baylor University School of Law teaching courses on International Trade Law and International Business Transactions. He has also previously taught Business Law for Accountants to graduate students at Texas A&M – Commerce, and “The Legal Environment of Business” at the University of Dallas.

Jim has published one legal textbook, Chester’s Guide to International Business Law, and is author or co-author of several chapters of legal compilation texts. In addition, he has written numerous articles published in law reviews and industry journals and is a frequent speaker at legal and other industry events.

Jim is also an entrepreneur. He is CEO and co-founder of Engage (a co-working space for attorneys); OWL Suites (online office space platform similar to Air BnB), and other business ventures. He also invented a grilling spice blend sold at retail stores, and a salsa recipe that garnered 3rd Place in the State of Texas in a 2015 competition.

Jim lives in Heath, Texas with his wife, Beadie, and their four children. He serves as on the Parks & Trails Board for the City of Heath, Texas, and is president of his neighborhood HOA.
