Who is considered an Experienced Attorney in Mississippi? 

Attorneys in Mississippi are considered experienced after they have been admitted for 2 or more reporting cycles and have completed the New-Lawyer program.  

 

What are the Mississippi CLE Requirements for Experienced Attorneys? 

Experienced Mississippi Attorneys must complete at least 12 CLE credits, including at least 1 CLE credit in Ethics/Professionalism, each year.  

 

How can Experienced Attorneys in MS fulfill their CLE Requirements?

Are there other ways Experienced Attorneys in MS can earn CLE credit? 

Yes! Experienced Attorneys in Mississippi can earn CLE credit for the following: 

  • Teaching an approved CLE course: Attorneys can earn 6 CLE credits for each hour of teaching at an approved CLE course so long as the course has high quality written materials. If a course only includes a 1 – 2-page outline or no written materials, attorneys can earn 3 CLE credits for each hour of instruction. Repeated presentations can earn half the credits from the initial presentation. Mississippi attorneys can earn a maximum of 12 CLE credits for teaching each reporting cycle and attorneys cannot be paid to teach the course. 

 

What is the deadline for Experienced Attorneys in MS to complete their CLE credits? 

Attorneys must complete their CLE requirement by July 31st each year 

 

Can Experienced Attorneys in MS carry over excess CLE credits from one cycle to another? 

Yes! Mississippi attorneys can carry over up to 12 CLE credits earned in excess of the minimum requirement. The carryover credits must be reported on the annual report of compliance during the reporting cycle they were completed. Ethics credits can be carried forward as general credit. 

 

If an attorney lives outside MS and does not practice law in MS, do they need to fulfill the CLE requirement? 

No! Attorneys who live outside of Mississippi and are licensed to practice in Mississippi but do not engage in the practice of law in Mississippi can claim an exemption to the CLE requirement on the annual report of compliance.  

How many credits can MS attorneys complete on CLE Companion? 

CLE Companion does not accredit courses for Mississippi. However, we believe our courses would qualify for MS credit approval pursuant to the Rules of the Mississippi State Board of Continuing Legal Education. MS attorneys can self-accredit CLE Companion programs. 

 

Who is considered a MS Newly Admitted Attorney? 

Attorneys in Mississippi are considered Newly Admitted during the reporting cycle in which they were admitted and for the following reporting cycle.  

 

What are the MS CLE Requirements for Newly Admitted Attorneys? 

Newly Admitted Attorneys must complete an approved New-Lawyer program of 12 hours of CLE courses including 6 CLE hours in Basic Skills Training and 6 CLE hours in Ethics/Professionalism.  

 

How can MS Newly Admitted Attorneys complete their CLE Requirements? 

Mississippi Attorneys can fulfill their CLE Requirement by taking CLE courses that have been approved to fulfill the New-Lawyer requirement. These courses are offered by several providers and in a number of formats. Some acceptable course formats include:

What is the deadline for MS Newly Admitted Attorneys to complete their CLE credits? 

Newly Admitted Attorneys must complete their CLE requirement by the second July 31st following admission. For example, an attorney admitted in December 2017 would need to complete the New-Lawyer program by July 31st, 2019. 

 

Can Newly Admitted Attorneys in MS carry over CLE credits from one cycle to another? 

Yes! Mississippi attorneys can carry over up to 12 CLE credits earned in excess of the minimum requirement. The carryover credits must be reported on the annual report of compliance during the reporting cycle they were completed. Ethics credits can be carried forward as general credit.  

 

What if a Newly Admitted Attorney in MS is already admitted in another state? 

Attorneys who have been admitted to practice for 5 or more years in another US jurisdiction immediately prior to their admission are exempt from completing the 6 CLE hours in Basic Skills Training. They must still complete the 6 CLE hours in Ethics/Professionalism within 9 months and then they must complete the Experienced Attorney requirement. Mississippi attorneys must submit an affidavit of exemption within 3 months of their admission to the Mississippi Bar.

How do MS attorneys certify compliance? 

Mississippi attorneys must submit an annual report of compliance stating the completion or exemption of the CLE requirement. The annual report must include the CLE credits earned during that reporting cycle and the CLE credits that are being carried forward to the next reporting cycle.  

 

What is the deadline in MS for attorneys to certify their CLE compliance? 

Mississippi attorneys must certify their compliance by August 15th each year.
