Who is considered an Experienced Attorney in Colorado?

Experienced attorneys in Colorado are those who have already completed their first compliance period after being admitted to the Colorado Bar.

 

What are the MCLE Requirements for Experienced Colorado Attorneys?

Experienced Colorado attorneys must complete 45 CLE credit hours, including at least 7 Legal Ethics credits, every three years. The remaining 38 credit hours may be in any other CLE credit category.

Are there other ways Experienced Attorneys in Colorado can earn CLE credit?

Yes! Experienced Colorado Attorneys can receive credit for:

  • Speaking or teaching an accredited CLE program. Attorneys earn up to 4 CLE credits for every 50 minutes of teaching, including prep time.
  • Publishing legal research-based writing. Provided that it is not done in the ordinary course of the practice of law, the performance of judicial duties, or other regular employment, Colorado attorneys can earn credit for legal research activities. The maximum of 9 credits per reporting period.
  • Participating in the Colorado Attorney Mentor Program (CAMP). Attorneys can participate as a mentor or mentee and earn credit based upon the length of the program.
    • Completing a 1 year CAMP program earns 9 CLE credits including 2 Ethics.
    • Completing a 6 month CAMP program earns 4 CLE credits including 1 Ethics.
  • Providing pro bono legal services. Attorneys may earn 1 general CLE credit for every 5 billable-equivalent hours. Maximum 9 pro bono General Credits per reporting period via any combination of pro bono representation and mentoring.
  • Independent Study (Maximum 9 CLE credits, no Ethics allowed)
    • Attending or teaching a non-accredited course
    • Required training and preparation to be a judge or evaluator of a mock trial, moot court, or client counseling class.
    • Actively engaging as a legislator in the Colorado General Assembly.

What is the deadline for Experienced Attorneys in Colorado to complete their CLE credits?

Colorado attorneys must complete their CLE requirements by December 31st every three years.

Note: When self-applying for an On-Demand course in CO, attorneys should use the Independent Study Form. CO attorneys can take a maximum of 9 credits per reporting cycle in Independent Study courses and are limited to General credit only.

 

Is there an exception for Experienced Attorneys in Colorado who live in, practice in and are licensed in another jurisdiction?

Experienced Colorado Attorneys who live in, practice in and are licensed in another jurisdiction with a mandatory CLE requirement may take advantage of Comity.

Comity allows a CO attorney to submit proof of their compliance of another jurisdiction’s MCLE requirement every 3 year reporting period to the Colorado Office of Attorney Registration. This will fulfill their Colorado MCLE requirement.

COLORADO CLE REQUIREMENTS – NEWLY ADMITTED ATTORNEYS

Who is considered a Newly Admitted Attorney in Colorado?

Newly admitted attorneys in Colorado are those who are still within their first compliance period. The first compliance period begins on the date of admission to the bar of the State of Colorado and ends on December 31st of the third full calendar year following the year of admission.

 

What are the MCLE Requirements for Newly Admitted Colorado Attorneys?

Newly admitted attorneys in Colorado must complete 45 CLE credit hours, including at least 7 Legal Ethics credits, within their first compliance period. The remaining 38 credit hours may be in any other CLE credit category.

The mandatory course “Practicing with Professionalism” taken before a CO attorney is admitted, satisfies 6 General credits towards the first compliance period. The credit from this course is valid for 18 months following completion of the course.

COLORADO CLE REQUIREMENTS – COMPLIANCE & REPORTING

How do Colorado Attorneys certify compliance?

To report credits earned through a Colorado program, CO Attorneys will use the CLE online affidavit system to enter the course ID number and report the credits they’ve earned. Affidavits can be mailed in but will not be accepted by email or fax. Colorado Attorneys should keep a record of all accredited courses they attend. Colorado Attorneys may view a copy of their current transcript by using the online affidavit system.

 

What is the deadline for Colorado attorneys to report their courses?

Colorado attorneys must report their CLE credits by January 31st every 3 years.
